The American Cancer Society and Amica Team Up to Make a Birthday Wish Come True
Cancer survivor and Fall River resident Stevie Raposo will not forget his 13th birthday any time soon. Amica Insurance and the American Cancer Society are teaming up to give Stevie and his family the Celtics experience of a lifetime: on April 4, they will sit courtside at the Boston Celtics game, receive a custom jersey, have dinner with a Celtics legend, and present the referees with the game ball at center court before tip-off.
Amica President and CEO Ted Shallcross is a member of the New England CEOs Against Cancer Chapter, a premier partnership between the American Cancer Society (ACS) and leading world executives. Together, they work to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.
“Just as it takes a special team to treat those impacted by cancer, we are proud to come together with our partners from the American Cancer Society and the Celtics to help this wish come true for Stevie,” said Shallcross. “Having been closely involved with the American Cancer Society, I’ve seen firsthand how they help uplift those with cancer during an incredibly trying time in their lives.”
While this birthday will be magical, Stevie’s 10th birthday was quite different. He developed a lump on his tongue, which his dentist thought was scar tissue. He was referred to an oral surgeon, and after a biopsy, the family learned that Stevie had clear cell sarcoma—an aggressive form of cancer not common in children and not usually located in the mouth. Stevie went to Dana Farber/Boston Children’s Hospital for treatment, where the tumor was removed.
“As terrible as a cancer diagnosis for a 10-year-old is, our family received so much support. The message we kept hearing is, ‘You are not alone in this,’” said Jen Raposo, Stevie’s mom. “Just the year before his diagnosis, our family attended the Fall River Relay For Life event to support a family friend. After his diagnosis, Stevie started making bracelets as a fundraiser for their team. He now attends the event every year to proudly walk with other cancer survivors,” said Raposo.
