Program Information

StreetSmart by AmicaTM (StreetSmart) is a free smartphone app for iOS and Android devices that provides feedback about your driving, helping you become a safer driver.

StreetSmart gathers data from position and inertial sensors, and measures driving behavior based on:

  • Hard braking
  • Speeding
  • Road segment type
  • Phone distraction 
    • Phone use 
    • Phone screen tapping

We currently offer StreetSmart to Amica auto policyholders in Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin.

  • An overall 91-day score is provided to Amica and affects the premium discount you’re eligible to receive. This score is not visible within StreetSmart. Your policy discount is influenced by:
    • Hard braking
    • Excessive speeding
    • Road segment type
    • Phone distraction
      • Phone use
      • Phone screen tapping
  • Eligible Users who enroll early in their policy period will receive a flat enrollment discount on their current policy, and upon renewal, their discount percentage will be adjusted based on their 91-day score.
  • Eligible Users who enroll late in their policy period (not enough time to receive a 91-day score prior to renewal), will receive a flat enrollment discount on their policy renewal. Once they’ve received a 91-day score, their discount will be adjusted accordingly at a future renewal.
  • The total discount at renewal may vary based on renewal timing and other Eligible Users on the policy.
  • If the number of Eligible Users exceeds the number of vehicles on their policy, they may be eligible for rewards only and not additional discounts.

StreetSmart collects and analyzes the following driving data to provide you with a two-week driving score that’s displayed on your dashboard. This score determines your rank on the leaderboard, as well as which rewards and achievements you earn. Additional details about this score can be found on the Trends tab. Your score is influenced by:

  • Hard braking
  • Speeding
  • Phone distraction
    • Phone use
    • Phone screen tapping

You’ll be given a score out of 100, which will appear at the top of your dashboard and refresh after every trip. This is not a daily score reflective of trips taken that day, but instead, this score will always reflect an average of your last two weeks of driving. Your two-week score can change daily, even if you don’t take any trips that day, because trips from more than 14 days ago will roll off your average score each day.

The leaderboard ranks all participants in the program based on their driving score in four categories: overall score, distraction (phone use and phone screen tapping), speeding and braking. Any participant can have their username appear on the leaderboard.

The leaderboard doesn’t impact your standing with Amica, nor will it have any impact on your driving score, discount or rewards.

No. Driving data won’t impact your rates with Amica. Driving data only affects the premium discount you receive.

Rewards for specific safe-driving behaviors are earned when you achieve badges in the StreetSmart app. You can go to your Dash or Profile tabs to view all of the available badges under your Latest Achievements. In your Achievements, simply tap on a badge to learn more about how to earn it. If the badge is lit up in color, then you’ve earned your reward. If the badge is still grayed out, click on it to see your progress toward your reward!

After earning a reward, the value is automatically added to your balance, and, if you have push notifications enabled, you’ll receive a message notifying you of your accomplishment. Rewards can be redeemed for e-gift cards in $5 increments, and you’ll need a minimum of $5 to redeem. You can choose to redeem rewards as soon as you’ve earned $5, or wait to redeem them when you reach $10, $15, $20, etc.

You can select e-gift cards from popular retailers such as Amazon, iTunes, Best Buy, Sephora, Target and Starbucks, or make a charitable donation to organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity or the Special Olympics. All rewards are managed through Tango, a rewards vendor.

StreetSmart records:

  • Location, speed and heading (the direction in which you’re traveling)
  • Accelerometer data
  • Gyroscope data
  • Magnetometer data
  • Barometer data
  • Time
  • Information about use of the app

Technical Information

Using mobile telematics, StreetSmart gathers data from position and inertial sensors, and measures driving quality based on:

Compatible smartphones include iPhones running Apple iOS 8 or higher and Android smartphones running Google Android 4.4 or higher.

The following smartphones are not compatible with StreetSmart:

  • Samsung Galaxy Note II
  • BLU Life One XL
  • HTC One Max VZW
  • HTC M8
  • HTC One M8 Eye
  • Huawei P7
  • Huawei P7 mini
  • Huawei Ascend P7
  • Moto G (third generation)
  • Any phone without a gyroscope sensor

No. StreetSmart runs in the background of your smartphone and records trips automatically once it detects your vehicle is in motion. For the best experience, keep the StreetSmart by Amica™ app open in the background.

No. Apps cannot run if your smartphone is powered off; however, turning the screen off is fine.

Yes, but StreetSmart has a limited effect on your smartphone's battery. The effect varies from one smartphone model to another, and may be based on the age of the smartphone. Battery consumption is highest when the app uses GPS. For this reason, we use a variety of sensors to maximize battery efficiency.

Please note that when your smartphone's battery is less than 10%, StreetSmart won’t record any data and you won’t be able to manually record your trip.

An internet connection is not required to record a trip. However, in order to upload the trip to be processed and scored, and for StreetSmart to download new scored trips, you’ll need an internet connection. This will occur automatically when your smartphone is connected to the internet.

No. Once StreetSmart is installed, it will automatically run in the background. You don’t need to have the StreetSmart app open or in view while driving. StreetSmart is activated to record trips based on smartphone movement.

StreetSmart will learn your individual driving style over time, including your common routes. By taking this into account, along with contextual signals, StreetSmart will attempt to determine whether you were a driver or passenger. You can review and correct your trip classification from driver to passenger, or vice versa, as necessary, which helps StreetSmart’s algorithms become more accurate.

To change your trip classification from driver to passenger, or vice versa, open StreetSmart and navigate to the “Trips” screen. Tap the steering wheel icon in the upper-right corner. You’ll see a series of options to select the correct classification.

The "recording your trip" notification appears when trip detection starts recording GPS sensor data, no matter the circumstance. An accurate determination of whether someone is driving cannot occur until we have GPS data identifying the speed and data points.

Once the trip uploads, trip processing trims away any sensor data from before the speed is above 5 mph, so it shouldn’t result in any penalties for distraction while walking to the car. If you notice that this has happened on any of your trips, please simply mark that trip as ‘Other’ and it will not count toward your driving data.
